The benefits, i.e sick pay and a good pension are attractive when you have a family. More concern about the administration of it than any other factor. My father worked on the city crew for twenty years under incompetents and slackers. He did come away with funny stories when he went in business with his sons, retiring early. Such as a time he coated the City Hall roof with a special paint from dawn to clock-in (to avoid the heat of summer). Then asked the foreman, "Can I go home when I'm finished with the roof?" "Sure!", was the answer. Then he said, "Okay, bye." I gather he would have gone into business himself earlier if it weren't for the attractive insurance and benefits while raising so many children.
